Buying a computer module or ignition part online is different from buying most other auto parts — it has to be programmed correctly to your specific vehicle, and if any part of that process is unclear, you can end up with a part that "works" but still won't start your car. These five questions take a couple of minutes to ask and can save weeks of back-and-forth.
1. Is this actually rebuilt, or just cleaned up?
"Remanufactured" and "used, tested" are different things, and a good listing will tell you which one you're getting rather than applying one label to everything. Ask what work was actually done to the specific unit you're looking at.
2. What's the real turnaround time — not the advertised range?
Programmed parts take real time to prepare correctly, so a wide shipping estimate isn't automatically a red flag. What matters is whether the seller gives you a straight answer about where your specific order actually stands if you ask, rather than a repeated "still processing."
3. If it doesn't work, is it a refund or store credit?
Ask this before you buy, not after something goes wrong. A seller's return policy should be written down somewhere you can read it in advance — ours is — rather than something you find out about mid-dispute.
4. Is key or fob programming included, or a separate cost?
This is the single biggest source of surprise charges in this category. If a fob or key ships with the part, confirm it's already matched to the programming — and if your vehicle needs anything else (a specific fob style, a scan tool, a locksmith visit), get that in writing before you order.
5. Can you actually reach someone who knows your order?
Automated status emails are fine as a supplement, but you should be able to get a real answer from a real person if something looks off. Test this before you buy — ask a specific question about your vehicle and see how clear the answer is.
