BMW & Mini FRM3 Footwell Module Failure: Symptoms, Causes, and the Fix

BMW & Mini FRM3 Footwell Module Failure: Symptoms, Causes, and the Fix

If the windows in your BMW or Mini suddenly stopped working, the brake lights or turn signals went out, or the low beams stay on no matter what — all at the same time — there's a good chance it isn't a dozen separate problems. It's one module: the FRM3 footwell module.

What the FRM3 module does

The FRM (Footwell Module) is a small computer mounted near the driver's feet that controls a surprising amount of the car: exterior lighting, turn signals, brake lights, power windows, and more. Because so much runs through it, when it fails, a whole list of things quit at once.

Common symptoms of a failed FRM3

  • Power windows don't work — one, several, or all of them.
  • No brake lights.
  • No turn signals.
  • Low beam headlights stay on whenever the car is running.
  • Lighting or footwell module warnings on the dash, and scan tools that can't communicate with the module.

Why FRM3 modules go bad

The most common cause is low voltage. When the battery runs down, gets disconnected, or the car is jump-started, the voltage can dip while the module is saving data. On these modules, that can corrupt the memory that holds the module's software and coding — leaving it "bricked." The hardware is usually fine; the module just doesn't know how to run anymore.

That's why the problem often shows up right after a battery replacement, a jump start, or the car sitting for a long time.

Which vehicles are affected

Our repair covers FRM3 and FRM3R modules (any part number) from:

  • BMW: E81, E82, E84, E87, E89, E90, E91, E92, E93, E70, E71, E72
  • Mini Cooper: R55, R56, R57, R58, R59, R60, R61

Repair vs. replacement

A new or used replacement module has to be coded to your car before it works, which usually means a dealer or specialist visit. Repairing your own module avoids that: we restore its software and the coding it had before it failed, so it plugs back in and works.

One limit to know: modules with water or flood damage, or with a burnt processor (MCU) or other physical damage, can't be repaired.

How our FRM3 repair works

  1. Remove your module. It's to the left of the pedals, behind the plastic trim panels.
  2. Mail it to us. After you order, we send you the address.
  3. We repair it and restore your coding, then ship it back within 1 business day of it arriving.
  4. Plug it in and drive. No programming needed — and the repair carries a lifetime warranty.

Not sure it's the FRM? Send us your symptoms and your car's model and year, and we'll let you know.
