2004-2006 Scion xB Instrument Cluster Problems: Dead Speedometer, Tach, and Flickering Display

The first-generation Scion xB (2004-2006) is a cult favorite — boxy, reliable, and easy to keep running for a very long time. But almost every owner eventually runs into the same problem: the center-mounted instrument cluster starts acting up. The speedometer quits, the tach goes dead, or the whole display flickers on and off.

Common Scion xB cluster symptoms

  • Speedometer stops working or drops to zero while you're driving.
  • Tachometer is dead or jumps around.
  • Gauges work some days and not others, or cut out over bumps.
  • Problems that change with the temperature — fine when it's cool, dead once the cabin warms up, or the other way around.
  • Dim, flickering, or blank display on the odometer or gear indicator.

Before you blame the cluster

If only the speedometer is wrong and everything else on the cluster works, a vehicle speed sensor or wiring problem is worth ruling out first. But when the gauges cut in and out together, change with temperature, or the display flickers, the cluster itself is the usual cause.

Why repair beats a used cluster

A used cluster from a salvage yard is just as old as yours and can fail the same way. It also shows the donor car's mileage, not yours, and may not be paired to your vehicle.

Repairing your own cluster avoids all of that. You get the same unit back, so your mileage stays correct and it stays paired to your xB — no reprogramming needed after you install it.

How our Scion xB cluster repair works

  1. Remove your cluster from the top of the dash.
  2. Send it in.
  3. We repair the speedometer, tachometer, and display circuits and test it.
  4. We ship the same unit back, ready to plug in, with your mileage intact — and a lifetime warranty on the repair.

Have a question about your symptoms first? Send us a message and we'll help you figure out if it's the cluster.
